When replacement labour costs more

  • Non-standard sizes

Anything outside 8x7, 9x7, 10x7, 16x7, and 18x7 needs custom hardware. Track and spring kits cost more, and labour goes up by $100 to $300.

  • Old track removal

If your tracks are bent, rusted, or sized for a thinner door, the installer has to cut them out. Add $50 to $150 in labour.

  • Structural surprises

A rotted header beam or warped jamb has to be repaired before the new tracks bolt up. Carpentry rates are $75 to $125 per hour.

  • Access problems

Narrow driveways, tight ceiling clearance, or working over a finished floor add time. Expect a $50 to $150 access surcharge on tough installs.

Does the labour quote include disposal of the old door?
On most replacements, yes. About three quarters of installers bundle haul-away into a flat-rate replacement quote. The remaining quarter charge $25 to $100 separately for disposal. Always confirm in writing, and if you live somewhere with a paid bulk-pickup service the installer is just billing through the city fee.
Is labour cheaper if I buy the door myself?
Sometimes. You save the installer markup on the door (typically 10 to 25 percent), but many installers will refuse to warranty a door they did not source. A few will charge a small upcharge ($50 to $100) to install homeowner-supplied hardware. Run the numbers both ways and compare.
Do installers charge more for insulated doors?
Slightly. Insulated panels are heavier, so a single-person crew usually adds $25 to $75 to the labour line on a 16x7. The bigger labour driver is door size, not insulation. The premium for an insulated door sits in the door price, not the install.
What if the new door does not fit the existing tracks?
Most modern doors are sized to standard tracks, so this is rare. When it does happen, expect $50 to $200 in extra labour to remove and refit the tracks, plus the cost of the new track set. A good installer will measure your existing tracks before ordering the door to avoid surprises on install day.
How long does a 16x7 double-door replacement take?
A two-person crew typically completes a 16x7 replacement in four to six hours. That includes spring removal, panel teardown, new panel install, fresh torsion springs, opener reconnection, balance test, and a homeowner walk-through. A single-person crew can do it but will run closer to seven hours.
